Board-and-train sells a immersive stay: one dog, one program, weeks of daily sessions, kennel occupancy, go-home transfer, follow-ups. Group class sells a seat in a series: many dogs, shared curriculum, fixed weekly time, graduation at session six or eight.

Owners confuse them on the phone. Software should not.

When a platform models class as "short board-and-train" or as a generic appointment series, staff invent shadows: roster spreadsheets, manual seat counts, separate tuition links, attendance on paper.

The Data Shape That Actually Fits

Cohort, not enrollment duration. A class is "Puppy Foundations — Tue 6pm, starts July 7, six sessions, capacity eight." Dogs join the cohort; they do not each carry an independent end date unless they drop.

Materialized sessions. Weekly (or multi-weekday) session rows generated at publish give trainers something to mark attendance against and give owners a schedule they can trust.

Capacity at cohort level. Board-and-train caps concurrent immersive enrollments. Class caps seats per series. Different rule, different enforcement point.

Curriculum reuse. Skills and homework templates attach to the program; the cohort inherits them. Per-dog progress still matters, but the class shares a weekly arc.

Where Workarounds Hurt

Picture a facility that registers class dogs as zero-night boarding stays. Occupancy reports inflate. Night staff see dogs that are not in runs. Refunds attach to the wrong invoice type.

The fix is not more staff discipline. It is a delivery model that matches how the business sells.

Decision Test for Your Stack

Ask three questions before you configure (or buy):

1. Can I publish a cohort and see seat fill without a spreadsheet?
2. Does portal registration enforce capacity including in-flight checkouts?
3. Does each dog's class history stay on the pet record after graduation?

If any answer is no, you are running class on borrowed infrastructure.

Dog training facility software should list multiple delivery models — board-and-train, group class, and eventually day training and private lessons — without forcing each into a boarding-shaped box. Operators feel the difference on the first publish day.
