Day training capacity runs on throughput: how many dogs you can receive, train, document, and release before the lobby fills for boarding check-ins. Overnight occupancy counts bodies in runs at 10 p.m. Those numbers overlap on a mixed floor, but they answer different questions. When day training inherits boarding occupancy math, facilities overbook trainer hours while runs still look empty, or turn away day-train revenue because the overnight chart hit a cap that never applied to same-day dogs.
What Overnight Occupancy Actually Measures
Boarding capacity is a space question. How many runs are occupied tonight? How many check-ins arrive Thursday? Can we hold a run for a week-long stay starting Monday?
The constraint is physical. A dog in a run from drop-off to pickup occupies that square until checkout. Occupancy reports, in-house dashboards, and run assignment views all built for boarding answer that question well.
Training capacity adds a labor question on top of space. A day-train dog may never sleep in a run. It still needs intake at 8:00, a training block, session notes before pickup, and a handoff at the desk before 4:30. Board-and-train dogs in-house need session blocks too, often from the same trainer roster.
Software that shows run occupancy without trainer workload tells you whether a kennel square is free. It does not tell you whether anyone can train another dog today.
The Short-Hours Shortcut and Where It Breaks
Facilities often register day-train dogs as one-night stays with same-day checkout, or cap day training at "open runs minus boarders." Both borrow overnight infrastructure for a delivery model that crosses the threshold twice every training day.
Night staff see dogs that never slept in runs. Revenue attaches to boarding line items while trainers document on a training screen the desk does not open at pickup. Day-train capacity becomes whatever the occupancy chart allows, even when the real limiter is the trainer who still owes session notes from the morning block.
Picture an eight-run facility on a Wednesday in March. Two board-and-train dogs are in-house. Four boarding guests arrive for the holiday weekend. The occupancy chart shows two open runs.
The owner approves two new day-train enrollments because the chart has room. What the chart does not show: one lead trainer carries both board-and-train session blocks, puppy class setup at noon, and the pickup rush starting at 4:15. Drop-offs stack between 7:45 and 8:30. Pickups collide with a boarding check-in at 4:20.
By 4:45, one day-train owner leaves without a summary because afternoon work never made it into session notes. Thursday morning, the trainer reconstructs Wednesday before the first drop-off. The occupancy report still shows the facility had capacity. The floor had a throughput problem.
Capacity Rules Day Training Needs Separately
Mixed facilities that run day training alongside board-and-train usually settle on a few rules once they stop using overnight math for same-day dogs.
Count trainer blocks first. A facility might safely run five day-train dogs with two trainers on dedicated blocks, or three with one lead trainer who also carries in-house board-and-train work. The number comes from hours and handoffs, not run count.
Separate the day-train cap from overnight occupancy. Runs may host boarders at night while day-train dogs use yards and training spaces during daylight. An empty run at 2 p.m. does not mean you can intake another day-train dog at 3 p.m. if pickup window and documentation deadlines are already full.
Publish pickup windows as capacity commitments. "Training until we call you" creates a parking lot queue that collides with boarding turnover. A 4:00 to 4:30 pickup block is a staffing decision the desk can plan around.
Same-day turnover needs named owners before 8:00 a.m. Drop-off intake, session documentation, and pickup summary should have names attached at the start of the day. When pickup compresses documentation, the dog still leaves with an owner who expects to hear what happened today.
Day-train history stays on the training enrollment. Each visit should attach session notes to the same program record so Wednesday's work follows Tuesday's. Capacity planning for re-enrollment depends on that history surviving past each evening checkout.

What to Look for Before You Add Day-Train Spots
Before you raise the day-train cap or approve another enrollment, ask four questions your stack should answer without opening three screens:
- How many day-train dogs are scheduled for intake, active training, and pickup today, separate from overnight boarders?
- Which trainer blocks are committed to in-house board-and-train work, and what room remains for same-day dogs?
- Can staff see pending session notes for dogs leaving in the next two hours?
- Does capacity enforcement look at same-day throughput and trainer hours, not only empty runs overnight?
A "no" on any of those means day training is running on boarding rails. The facility will keep finding out at pickup, not at enrollment.
